Jo Peel is an artist who delights in depicting everyday scenes and scenarios of cities, finding beauty in tumble-down factories, urban skylines and abandoned shops. By drawing, Peel offers her view that these cityscapes are just as important to the English artistic tradition as the natural beauty of areas such as the Peak District that buttresses her home city of Sheffield. She works over a variety of mediums, including large public murals, hand painted animations and short films. In 2015 she returned to her home town of Sheffield to create a major solo exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, which contrasted Sheffield and Pittsburgh – both cities famed for their involvement in Steel. Entitled Steel City, City on the Move, the project explored the shared steel legacies of the cities through murals, painting and film.
